Our day starts with a visit to the Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios, a century-old textile factory where the traditional Alentejo blankets and rugs are handwoven on giant looms operated by trained weavers. We’ll learn the process behind these beautiful textiles as well as go behind the scenes to see the giant looms in action!
Our journey continues to the picturesque town of Monsaraz, a walled city set upon a hilltop. A charming village perched high above the River Guadiana, Monsaraz is close to the frontier of Spain and is one of the most atmospheric places in the entire Alentejo region. With its narrow cobbled lanes, red-tiled roofs, and striking picture-book castle, you can feel the true essence of medieval Portugal in one of the oldest places in southern Europe. Enjoy a stroll through the village with plenty of time to shop from local artisans famous for their pottery and more!
Along the way, we’ll stop in at an organic farm and vineyard famous for its clay pot vintages. We’ll have a private tasting to learn the unique process of distilling in clay as we drink in the Alentejo region’s fine wines.
We’ll end this magical day with a special sunset art party and workshop. Taking inspiration from the vibrant textiles of this region, Kate will go over techniques for creating your very own layered watercolor textile paintings. The evening is yours to enjoy, with lots of local recommendations for dinner in town.
